. and paul ryan just now on the laura engram radio show, saying this about afghanistan. >> that echos also what john mccain said on "morning joe" today. are they trying to change the skubts to get off -- subject to get off 47% and other missteps and perceived problems in their camp or see a real vulnerability here after benghazi in the way that the white house has handled this? >> if they see a real vulnerability andrea, it's not born out in the public data yet. look at all the data, that goes back months and months the one place where president obama has been strong is on foreign policy and his handling of terrorism. you can argue after benghazi and what's happened in the, you know, few weeks since what we've learned, maybe that's weakened somewhat, but i still think that this is an election decided on who do you think has the better skillset to move the economy forward? i think foreign policy matters. clearly look, an op-ed and then paul ryan saying what he said with laura engram is not by accident. it's purposeful. i think they wind up coming back to the economy. >> that is the subject

most of their debates. >> greta: another topic, full disclosure, congressman paul ryan, rhines priebus, chair of the rnc is coming up, steve hayes on the show, the executive produce of "hannity," we're all owners of one share in the green bay packers. let's talk about the green bay packers. that's full disclosure. >> i brought two props to set the stage for all of our viewers. a nice green bay helmet. >> greta: signed by? >> brett favre. and a football signed by bart starr. >> greta: that is ellis the elephant? >> it's calista's character, whose new book comes out monday, "land of the pilgrim's pride." we knew that ellis who believes in doing the right thing would want to stand with the packers. >> greta: it's amazing how it's enraged the nation. it's sort of fun to have a topic that we can all sort of debate, be debris about, that doesn't have the consequences of something like libya or egypt. >> first of all, anybody who watched this play last night, it was unbelievable. and to have the nfl today come back and pretend it was the right decision was more unbelievable. my son-in-law is

. >> and to the battleground state of new hampshire where the republican vice presidential nominee paul ryan is speaking right now at a cam ppaign rallyn derry. paul ryan firing up the crowd. what's he saying? >> he is talking about the economy, talking about the deficit, talking about four years of president obama would be detrimental to the country. it's pretty plain and simple. president obama and republican nominee mitt romney are laying low today because they're getting ready to prepare for the debate, so it's the number 2s on the campaign trail. right behind me here, here's paul ryan stumping here in new hampshire, a crucial battleground state. when he's done here, he goes to ohio later today. another very big important battleground state. and that's the whole idea here, as the president and mitt romney get ready for the debate. paul ryan and vice president joe biden are on the campaign trail. specific new hampshire. the race here is kind of close. the most recent poll shows president obama with a five-point advantage over mitt romney. definitely a very close contest here in new hampshire. this is a sta

does not seem to be buying what the republicans are offering. when romney picked ryan as vice president, i said to my wife, i think romney may have lost the election here. the reason i said that was because by picking paul ryan, it opened up that argument of the republican party as extreme and the democrats just pounced on that as you would expect them to do. and the country does not want those extreme aspects of the republican party, those extreme right wing policies. they do realize that's what got us into this trouble both overseas with the war in iraq and also with the economy. and they are not going for it anymore. the republic no longer believes that the way to help middle class and low-income families is to give more money to the rich. so i thought that mitt romney would pivot to the middle. he decided not to do that. >> i feel like the country republicans people in the middle and on the left want a republican party that's essentially giving a good fight. so we can have a big hashed out discussion about how to fix our problems. i'll be talking more about that later in the show ab

on the campaign trail, erick, paul ryan, the republican vice presidential nominee, he's making some serious accusations against joe biden. but joe biden is responding. listen to what joe biden said today. >> for the previous eight years all the policies that congressman ryan voted for and governor romney said he supported, all those policies in a mere eight years, they doubled the national debt. they doubled the national debt from what they inherited in 2001. >> he's right on that because the debt was about $5 trillion when president bush took office, more than $10 trillion when he left office. i think he's referring to the two tax cuts that weren't paid for, the precipitation drug benefits that weren't paid for, two wars, iraq and afghanistan that weren't paid for that caused so much, at least 80% or 90% of that debt. >> well, you know, i actually don't think the wars caused added as much, but a lot of stuff did. here's a fact as well, yes, president bush left office with a double national debt. here's another fact the democrats don't like. president obama has added more to the national de

will understand, and if they do, i get elected. >> reporter: his running mate, paul ryan, is already preparing for his own debate a week away. >> i really believe in the policies that we're providing, we're pursuing. and at the end of the day, i'm just going to go in there and be me. >> reporter: and if you can't control what actually happens in the debate, you certainly control what happens afterwards. the spin already in the planning. ryan's going to be with romney in virginia. the president is staying in colorado for a rally there. veronica? >> tracie, we appreciate it. thank you. >>> nato forces in afghanistan say three international service members and their translator were killed in a suicide bombing in the eastern part of the country this morning. this as the war in afghanistan reached a grim milestone sunday with a death of the 2,000th u.s. service member. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel has the details. >> reporter: there has been another insider attack, the so-called green on blue attack, when afghan troops attack and kill their american partners. so far, this year, t

class that has been buried -- in his words, buried, the last four years. paul ryan at a campaign event in iowa just a few moments ago seized on those comments and said vice president biden said that the middle class has been buried. we agree. he goes onto say that means we need to stop digging by electing mitt romney the next president of the united states, wolf. i have a strg sense this will be brought up at tomorrow night's debate, wolf. >> we'll have a lot more on what joe biden has just said and the very tough reaction coming in from the romney campaign. gloria borger is standing by on that front. both of these campaigns are bringing major surrogates to denver to appear in the so-called spin room after the debate tomorrow night. what are you learning about the romney campaign's people who are coming in? >> reporter: wolf, it's probably no surprise rob portman, mitt romney's chief sparring partner playing barack obama in the debate, he'll be in the spin room. but we've also learned that marco rubio, the rising star, senator from florida who had a prominent role at the republican con

. >> reporter: in an interview, paul ryan accused the white house not coming clean on the event surrounding the murder of ambassador to libya chrissteins and three other americans on septembe september 11. >> you think they want to -- i think they want to do their best to expect people in america not to understand what happened. we expect candor and transparency; particularly, relating to terrorism. >> president on "the view" refused to describe the event the way his aides do. >> i heard hillary clinton say it was an act of terrorism. is it? what do you say? >> we're still doing an investigation. there is no doubt that kind of weapons used, the ongoing assault, that it wasn't just a mob action. we don't have all the information yet, so we're still governmentering it. >> you want to ask that question of the president. why is he not on the same page with his own administration officials who are saying this is a terrorist attack? we'll leave it up to you to decide whether it's a coverup or not. >> the republican lawmakers have begun questioning with increasing sharpness whether the obama admin

: the governor's running-mate echoing those sentiment. paul ryan telling chris wallace the handling of the attack in libya reflects only one part of a larger problem. >> the response was slow. it's inconsistent. the obama foreign policy is unraveling before our eyes on our tv screens. bill: governor romney will give a major foreign policy speech soon after the first debate ends. the first debate ends wednesday night, as you know. martha: marshalackburn has also criticized the white house response. she'll join us on what she thinks should happen next. we are getting reports of another homicide bombing killing 14 people, two of them americans. the bomber drove into a nato patrol. doug mcelway joins us live. it was a couple weeks ago the u.s. suspended patrols with afghan soldiers because of these insider attacks. have these joint patrols resumed now? >> reporter: they have. they resumed last thursday and the insider attacks have also resumed. not only the attack you just mentioned but also the suicide bomber attack, homicide bomber attack. the motorcycle laden with explosives drove into that market

for coming out, everybody. >> there he is, republican paul ryan is in new hampshire, a small but critical state that both campaigns covet. he told the crowd this morning that mitt romney's term as governor next door in massachusetts proves he can get things done, even in a state dominated by democrats. and vice president joe biden is in another key swing state, wrapping up a two-day swing through florida, including this stop in fort meyers. he said that he and president obama inherited the financial mess we see, including the plan that the republican plan favors the wealthy. >>> and senator john kerry is playing the role of mitt romney in the president's practice session. and ohio senator rob portman is portraying the president in mitt romney's debate. more on the preview of wednesday's big event. >> as running mate paul ryan makes the rounds on the campaign trail here in new hampshire, and ohio, guess what? his boss is hunkering down, getting ready for the first showdown between him and president obama. romney is spending a lot of time this week to prepare for the debate. the same thing

of stage. >> paul ryan on the sunday talk shows. the running mate talking down expeations. look at this count. brand-new from abc news/"washington post" this morn ing. who's more likely to win the debates? the president by 20-some points. a lot of americans think the president will have the upper hand on wednesday night in denver. >> we'll see. many thanks. cnn's live coverage of wednesday night's debate starts at 7:00 eastern. >>> syria is expected to try to justify its actions in its bloody civil war when its foreign minister speaks before the united nations general assembly later this morning. nearly 30,000 people across syria have been killed. in the next hour look at the how the united states is helping the syrian opposition. we'll tell you if the united states is moving closer toward any military action. >>> grudges, infighting and crafty maneuvering. sounds like an episode of "dallas." except the actors are real. they're supreme court justices. the highest court in the land beginning its new term in less than an hour. it will meet on the heels of perhaps the most talked a

go bankrupt and then took credit for managing bankruptcy and then picked paul ryan as his running mate who was for the bailout. that's a consistent theme that romney doesn't have the right message. they do think they're losing. they do think because they have a strong ground game there there is still time to turn around. >> you make your point in the article that a lot of people think this thing will tighten as we get closer to election day. >> right. >> the other thing though is governor john kasich who had been promoting the ohio economic recovery even though he's a republican and trying to get mitt romney elected. romney of course has been talking down the economy because that's good for him. let's talk about that. >> yeah. that's a major complication. jim mengsed in his piece. the unemployment rate in ohio is 7.1%, in columbus it's about 6%. that's a bellwether area. stop after stop john kasich goes around the state and says ohio is booming, ohio is rocking. that gives headaches to people in washington saying hey, this conflicts with our message. there's ongoing friction and t

. for example, listen to what paul ryan, romney's running mate, had to say about obama's foreign policy yesterday while campaigning in ohio, zoraida. >> i think the president on too many occasions has deferred our foreign policy leadership to the u.n. security council, to the u.n., this means russia and china get to veto what we want to do. why do we want to give them that kind of clout over our national security interests? >> the goal here is to paint president obama as projecting weakness. ryan yesterday compared the situation in the middle east to tehran in 1979. you know, calling to mind the hostage crisis that helped undermine president jimmy carter's re-election bid. we've heard that many times before, zoraida. we'll see if that works this time. >> both candidates are speaking this morning. what do they hope to accomplish today. >> for the president, being president has -- is both an advantage and burden. the burden as elise mentioned earlier, he has to soothe anxieties both here and overseas about the middle east. but politically, he gets to look presidential. mitt romney doesn't

, we're hearing paul ryan and mitt romney will reunite essentially and campaign in virginia. president obama will be in denver and madison, wisconsin, and joe biden will be in iowa. obviously, a lot going on in the final -- and the final preparations for the debate and just right after. >> yeah, and, you know, you talk about the zingers which is so interesting. clearly, each candidate wants to at least make his mark and obviously say something memorable for all the voters there. romney running with paul ryan, he was on the sunday talk shows today. we haven't heard much out of vice president biden lately. we know you've been traveling with him. when he's on the record he says a lot of interesting things. i guess he says a lot of things when he's off the record with you guys. >> a lot of things we won't talk about right now. as you just said, i have been traveling extensively with the vice president, but publicly he's out with these new attack lines against his republican opponent basically saying one of the most memorable of late is the romney plan will basically increase the tacks on s

to speed on some of the day's headlines. republican vice presidential candidate paul ryan is campaigning in ohio talking, talking gun rights at a national men's sports conference. also vice president joe biden wrapped up a two-day swing through florida, including a stop in ft. myers. president obama and mitt romney keeping a low profile today. they are prepping for wednesday's first presidential debate. we have learned that senator john kerry is going to play the role of mitt romney in the president's practice sessions. ohio senator rob portman is portraying the president in mitt romney's debate preps. >>> general motors is recalling more than 40,000 cars. it is concerned about fuel pump modules that could crack and cause a fire. the recall affects the 2007 to 2009 chevrolet cobalt and pontiac g5. gm will replace the fuel part for free. >>> yes, it is over officially. regular nfl refs will be back on the field tomorrow. the refs union formally ratify a new contract today. the nfl agreed to a deal with the union earlier this week which allowed those refs to return on thursday to a standin

and paul ryan. all of them should be very proud that they have annoyed their opponents so much. check 4, speaking today at the clinton global initiative, mitt romney said this. >> if there is one thing we've learned in this election season, by the way, it is that a few words from bill clinton can do a man a lot of good. all i got to do now is wait a couple of days for that bounce to happen. >> bill: president clinton actually praised the governor in the introduction. that's what we like to see, a little detante now and then. finally, check five, there is chaos in the national football league because the referees are being locked out by the league in a wage dispute. and the substitute refs are having a hard time, to say the least. >> the packers play at the goal line. as wilson scrambles to keep it alive. the game's time play is a wilson lob to the end zone, which is -- simultaneous who has it? who do they give it to? touchdown! >> bill: well, it really wasn't a touchdown because the seattle receiver illegally pushed the green bay defender away. and didn't cleanly catch the ball anyway a

in a suit, and he is being photographed all the time. sow should have game on. >> paul ryan, he looks like a man who knows his own fashion brand a little better than obama i think. >> i think he looks like an american businessman on a weekend. and i think he's trying to portray that, i think he wants people to think he is like the guy next door in his dress, so i think he's accomplishing that. >> what about the one of him and mitt romney? alarming orange jacket there from mr. romney? >> i think they are trying to sort of like -- sort of like the normal guys next door. >> what about the first ladies? very different styles. quite fashionable to me. >> michelle is definitely fashionable. as a matter of fact, i would like her to wear my clothes. and i think mrs. romney looks very conservative, and i think maybe they want to portray her as being very conservative. >> and, finally, you have a cause very dear to your heart. about autism. a powerful clip. >> in a small town of elmira, new york, a boy was born into an all-american family. the odds of him achieving his dream in the fashion industry?

the trajectory of the campaign, his selection of a running mate, paul ryan, got a small bounce. the convention speech didn't get any bounce, and now the first debate. this is like the first night on broadway. there will be more voters tuning in, they will be looking at his performance and if he comes across as somebody who is credible, who is up to the task, he might get another bounce out of it. >> aren't undecided voters the least likely to tune into the debates? gallup looked back at records and found only two examples where debates really changed the course. that was 1960 and 2000. >> they are important moments for these candidates but you're exactly right. it's so hard to change anything at this point. why. these two guys are not unpainted canvases. barack obama, his canvas is pretty much filled in. we know him. we have seen him for four years. as president. mitt romney has been through a long and grueling campaign. there is very little white space left on his canvas. so if they're really going to do something different that changes how they're understood, it has to be something very big.

shrimp just $14.99. i'm ryan isabell and i sea food differently. why not take a day to9. explore your own backyard? with two times the points on travel, you may find yourself asking why not, a lot. chase sapphire preferred. there's more to enjoy. >>> getting a smack, getting paddled or getting hit with a belt. we're talking about spanking here. and it's something that is legal in school districts around the country. it's called corporal punishment. it's defined as punishment administered by an adult as a parent or a teacher to the body of a child ranging in severity from a slap to a spanking and it just happened to taylor santos in springtown, texas. to be clear, taylor was in trouble for cheating and she asked for the spanking instead of suspension. the school called mom and mom agreed. but what mom did not know is how severe it would be and that it would come from a male adult. take a listen. >> it looked almost as if it had been burned and blistered it was so bad. >> it was bright red like bad. i still have whelps on me today. >> the school board is now changing its stance on paddling.

for that on wednesday. jen, good to see you. we've heard the obama-biden perspective. what is does the romney-ryan team think? >> we have a member of their campaign team who will way in as well. there's a health company that can help you stay that way. what's healthier than that? >>> we just spoke with the top obama campaign aide. republican presidential mitt romney, he had a phone conversation with the prim minister, happened just moments ago. and romney met with netanyahu as recently as july during his trip to israel. the two men are friends. joining us, matt slap, former white house political director in the george w. bush administration. good to see you. respond, first, to the criticism and the accusations here that this is a political stunt here. you have the president who is already talking to yet raw hnet why is romney on the phone with netanyahu? >> i think it is totally appropriate for netanyahu to talk to the opposition government leader here in this country this is something that is standard protocol. quite frankly i think mr. netanyahu knows that his relationship with america is incredibly

opponent's plan for medicare, while at wong man's paul ryan's event in iowa today things took an emotional term when a veteran asked him about his social security benefits and why the government taxes the only source of income for a man who dedicated his life to defending his country. >> i served in the air force in 65 straight out of high school, and i learned in the military -- [applause] >> -- the skills that i had to take me through life. i served in grenada, and i served in iran, and i live off of social security. i live off a thousand dollars a month, and i cannot understand why this country that i gave my life for feels that they should tax me twice for social security. they already taxed me for that and they take a third of it back when they give me that check. >> you know i'm glad you brought that up, sir. [applause] >> now, there is a tax on social security benefits he's talking about. i voted consistently to repeal that tax because you know what you already paid for this. it's your benefit, you already paid tax on this money once before, number two, it's funny how joe biden and
